Young mental health ambassadors are calling for a major increase in mental health support for young people. Speaking with BBC Health, Catherine Burns met several youth representatives who described how difficult it can be to access help. They urged schools and communities to expand services and ensure that more professionals are trained to recognize mental health needs. The ambassadors also highlighted a deeper problem: stigma and silence. They said many young people feel judged or dismissed, especially when they try to explain anxiety, low mood, or other struggles. In their view, some older attitudes can make these concerns disappear rather than being addressed—“other generations just buried it.” Their message is clear: mental health should be treated as a normal part of health care. With earlier support and more open conversations, they believe young people can get the help they need sooner, which can protect wellbeing and reduce long-term harm.
