NASA has outlined the next phase of its effort to build a permanent Moon base. Rather than waiting for one future mission, the agency is designing a practical sequence of robotic steps that reduce risk and build real experience on the lunar surface. The first part includes “hopping” drones. Because the Moon’s terrain is uneven and covered in dust, these machines can jump to move efficiently where traditional wheels or walking may struggle. After that, NASA plans to deploy roving vehicles that can travel farther, explore wider areas, and collect detailed data about the environment. By combining these two types of robots, NASA aims to test movement, navigation, and operations in conditions that are very different from Earth. The information gathered will help guide later engineering decisions for a base that can last for years, and it will support the longer-term goal of enabling human activity on the Moon.
