Jupiter and Venus are set to stage a rare-looking “cosmic kiss” in the night sky, when the two planets will appear unusually close together to observers on Earth. The event is expected to be visible after sunset, especially in areas with clear weather. This sky show is known as a planetary conjunction. It happens because, as Earth moves in its orbit, the planets’ positions shift relative to our viewpoint. So, even though Jupiter and Venus remain separated by vast distances in space, they can line up near the same patch of sky from our perspective. Venus is typically very bright, while Jupiter is also prominent, which makes the pairing easier to spot than many other astronomical events. For the best chance to observe it, choose a darker location away from strong city lights. Binoculars can provide a more satisfying view, and a small telescope may reveal more detail.
