Jellyfish Cause Partial Shutdown At French Nuclear Plant

Jellyfish have triggered a partial shutdown at the Gravelines nuclear power station in northern France, according to BBC World. The issue is linked to the plant’s cooling system, which uses seawater. When jellyfish enter the water intake, they can clog parts of the system and raise safety and reliability concerns. Because of this, operators were forced to close part of the station temporarily, limiting how much power could be produced while the problem was handled. The BBC reports that this is the second year in a row that jellyfish have caused the Gravelines plant to shut down. The repeated disruption points to changing marine conditions that are bringing more jellyfish closer to the facility.
