A new initiative is tackling two problems at once: food waste and family hardship.
The scheme collects edible food that would otherwise be discarded and redistributes it to families during the week.
It is being run through schools across the West Midlands, including Birmingham and Walsall. Teachers and local partners help organize the process, making it easier for families to access the support. Food that is still safe and usable is gathered from school-related sources, then provided to participating households so they can prepare meals at home.
Supporters say the program can ease pressure on household budgets, especially for families who struggle with rising costs. At the same time, it reduces the amount of food that ends up in bins. By using school networks, the project reaches people more directly and turns surplus food into something valuable. Overall, it is a practical example of community action with measurable benefits.
