The University of Gloucestershire reports that a large share of new university students are not moving out right away. According to the university, around one third of students starting courses live with their parents. One student said moving away “wasn’t ready” for them, showing how the decision can be shaped by practical concerns. Costs like rent, bills, and transport can feel overwhelming, especially at the start of a degree.
For some students, the change also brings emotional pressure, such as fear of being alone and managing daily life without family support. Living at home can offer stability and help students save money while they adjust to university study. At the same time, staying at home may limit independence and reduce the full experience of campus life. The university is now examining why this pattern is happening and what support could help more students transition smoothly when they are ready to move out.
