Too Much Social Media Can Harm Wellbeing, Study Finds

A new analysis suggests that excessive social media use can negatively affect wellbeing. The World Happiness Reports examined the relationship between time spent on social platforms and how people rate their own happiness and life satisfaction. The findings show a consistent trend: as social media time increases, wellbeing tends to decline. In other words, heavier use is associated with a greater “loss” of wellbeing, which can reflect lower mood and reduced overall satisfaction. Importantly, the report does not argue that social media is universally harmful for everyone. However, it highlights a risk linked to high and sustained use, implying that frequent scrolling may undermine mental wellbeing. The results encourage people to be more intentional—such as limiting daily time, taking regular breaks, and balancing online activity with real-life connections. The study adds to growing concerns about digital habits and mental health, while leaving room for further research into why the pattern occurs.
