A new intensive care unit (ICU) ward is opening on the rooftop of King’s College Hospital in London. The ward is designed to let seriously ill patients spend time outside while still receiving close medical monitoring.
Doctors and nurses will watch how the outdoor setting affects recovery. The hospital plans to compare outcomes to see whether fresh air and natural light can help patients heal better and feel more comfortable during treatment.
The project also aims to learn what it means for patients and families to be in a different environment during a very stressful time. The team hopes the results will guide future care for ICU patients.
