King’s College Hospital in London has opened an intensive care ward on its rooftop—an outdoor space created for patients who are critically ill. The unit is designed to combine close medical monitoring with the potential benefits of a more natural environment. In this ward, nurses and doctors will provide continuous care, as they would in a traditional ICU, while also observing patients’ responses to being outside. Supporters of the project say that access to daylight, fresh air, and open views may help patients feel less cut off from everyday life during a difficult recovery period. The hospital plans to study whether the rooftop setting improves outcomes. Staff will track patients’ progress and collect health data to evaluate recovery more carefully than before. By comparing results over time, the team hopes to determine if this model can strengthen rehabilitation for people with severe conditions and guide future changes in critical care design.
