Western Europe is experiencing extreme heat. In many locations, temperature records are being broken, and some are being surpassed by a large amount. Experts point to two main causes. First, a “heat dome” is sitting over the region. This kind of weather system holds hot air in place and prevents it from moving away. Second, climate change has already increased average temperatures worldwide. So when the heat dome arrives, the starting point is higher than in the past. That combination helps explain why the warmth is so intense. Scientists also note that these events can raise health risks, increase energy demand, and harm ecosystems, especially for people and wildlife that cannot cool down easily.
